After spending as much time as you have on a set of skinnys you'd do fine on a mountain bike. Full suspension and some 2.1 tires and you'll feel like you're on a motorcycle.

It's more an endurance thing like a tri. You ride in a team so you don't have to go the whole 24. Although there are people that do.
I ride a very comfortable hard tail with 2.2's. Should be fine.
