China: the world's smokestack
"Along with aluminum and cement, steel is the biggest reason China added 90 gigawatts of generation capacity this year, the third year in a row in which it will increase its power output by more than the total capacity of Britain. About 85 percent of those new power plants burn coal."
This article is on the environmental impact of China's growth. But I found that last fact fascinating - "the third year in a row in which it will increase its power output by more than the total capacity of Britain." http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/20...R_GRAPHIC.html http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/21/wo...ld&oref=slogin |
