Bear bag advice
SO if you are out camping in a relatively remote area in which bears are known to live and you have a bunch of food but no trees suitable for a bear bag within 1/2 mile or maybe even more, what do you do with your food? If it is all double bagged in plastic bags is that enough? DO you just walk it far away from your camp site so that at least the bear will casue trouble away from wear you lie unconscious? This is a hike in location, btw, so locking it in the care is not an option.

Bear canister is really the only option. If you are in an area where bears are bad, hanging isn't really a good option anymore.
Over here in the Eastern Sierra, all of the ranger stations where you would get your permits, also have bear canister for rent for $5 for your entire trip. Well worth it. I take back the canister is the only option. A few years back they were making bear bags that were make of some sort of kevlar material. you just don't wnat something that a bear can get a hold of and take it with him. Double bagged in plastic bags isn't going to do it. I have seen car doors peeled off because a bear wanted to get at someones chapstick. |
