Do kind people wonder if they are kind?
Because I wonder whether I am kind, I take that as a sign that I am not. I figure the good people of the world do not wonder if they are good.
My wife says I hate children, with the exception of my own. That's a blessing right? To not hate your children? That's a mark in my favor, right? They say that service performed with a black heart is worse than no service at all. Or at least worth nothing. I don't agree. Because then all the service I have done in my life is worthless. Then you have the "there are worse people than me" arguments. Ted Bundy. Jeffrey Dahmer. Kobe Bryant. I'm not so bad, I think. There are worse. I'm kind of kind sometimes. |

The kind people I know actually fear they are often unkind. Many good people doubt their own goodness. This self-examination helps them redirect the internal compass to get back on course. Now, some people have easier times being kind or good but that's another matter. Kindness may be innate for some but in my mind it is often a learned trait as well.
