another "poor Michael Quinn" article, this time from Slate
http://www.slate.com/articles/life/f..._a_mormon.html
It seems like in 2012, he is an anachronism. Caught up in a time of controversies that would not play out today like they did then. |

There is a sense of sadness how his life has gone, don't you think?

He says he is enjoying his freedom outside the Church too much. Otherwise, I'd say we should rebaptize him.

this is the umpteenth iteration of this thesis. it loses its impact.
I wish the best to Quinn. Lots of poor people in the world though. |

I have ignored the other iterations as the subject hadn't interested me much. More only reading was that somebody without a job but who has some abilities as a historian ends his life as a footnote. Not a happy circumstance to be in.

He is getting another book published by Signature books. This time on Mormonism and business. It's not that bad for him.

He already has his place in the history of Mormon history. He's one of the most important figures of the past 30 years.
It's almost like he wants to say "I want to be accepted for who I am and what I did, and be in the good graces of the Saints." But he never overtly says this. The man is gay, right? I don't know about his personal life, but we don't necessarily know that his separation from the church has to do with his historical work. Would I be happy if I read one day that he was being rebaptized? Yes I would. I love it when people return. But I have no knowledge of what is needed for that to happen. And I assume that most people who have not returned to the church, are in that position as a matter of choice. |

I found that article interesting. I wouldn't really call it sad or "poor Michael Quinn." He seems to have found his niche as an outlier.
What else strikes me, reading this piece which was written sort of as a timeline, is that I was at BYU when all this went down (meaning the Sept Six, I guess). I don't recall it being part of the conversation there. SO either I was totally out to lunch (possible), or they really managed to public dialogue (scary). Maybe both. . . Incidentally, what does it take to get back in after excommunication? |
