Default Challenging the Honor Code

I wasn't sure if this belonged under Religion, Politics or Current Events since it's applicable to all 3.

Anyway, a student at the Sunstone Symposium had the guts to bring this topic up. I applaud her efforts.

If she really had guts, she would have brought it up when she was still a student, not after she left.

This is probably true. People are willing to bitch about it but not do anything to try to change it because they'll get kicked out. The honor code is absurd, but I'm willing to deal with it as a grad student for the cheap tuition.

That's a funny observation to be posting on this site.....ground zero for muttering under one's breath about everything in life but not doing a single thing about it.

Speaking of funny (i.e., dumbass) observations. How could you possibly know what everyone is doing in their private lives?

You are right.

I am sure many people here are standing up and protesting all the things they find objectionable about the Church.

My bad.

Where is this weekend's protest?

What a bunch of bull. When people say "change the Honor Code" it simply means "let me wear a beard."

Let's have a quick look at this oppressive code:

Quote:
Be honest
Wow. Controversial.

Quote:
Obey the law and all campus policies
The nerve!

Quote:
Live a chaste and virtuous life
Inconsistent with church doctrine, no?

Quote:
Respect others
Horribly oppressive.

Quote:
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
Who'd a thought a church school would require WoW adherence? So odd.

Quote:
Participate regularly in church services
A challenge for some of us, to be sure.

Quote:
Observe Dress and Grooming Standards
Dammit, I want my beard!

Quote:
Use clean language
Dammit, I just said dammit!

Quote:
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code
The infamous "rat out your brethren" clause.

Ashley Sanders is right. The Honor Code is an antiquated, oppressive, and unreasonable standard. It's time Mormon youth stand up for our right to cheat on tests, skip church, sleep around, drink beer, and engage in all around troglodytic behavior.

Who's with me?!

I am with you. You are right. We should let people wear beards since there is no real reason to do otherwise.

Which is why the honor code needs to be re-drafted.

Just as it was for jeans, sandals, and shorts.

Glad you are with us on this one Tex.

John Dehlin did an interesting two-part interview with her for the Mormon Stories podcast:

Part 1 -- http://mormonstories.org/podcast/Mor...AshSanders.mp4

Part 2 -- http://mormonstories.org/podcast/Mor...AshSanders.mp4

In the interview, she articulates her objections to the Honor Code.

did they repeal the portion prohibiting the "no-bra look"?

If so, that is awesome. More pokies to see.
